Foreign Holdings of US Government Debt

Over on Twitter (sorry, Elon) someone claimed China was the largest foreign holder of US debt.  I thought I remembered Japan holding that title.  So I did what any good economist would do: I looked for data on the foreign holdings of US government debt.  The obvious place to start was Treasury.gov.  Sure enough, I quickly found the data.  Here’s the link to the Excel workbook.  And here’s the short version:
